The Language Club of Westchester

"Recognition and recall of a language depend on proficiency, exposure and practice."

Recently The Language Club of Westchester planned and participated in the reading of Le Salon, a Theatre of the Absurd play in French, written by Debbie Wiess. The reading, which took place in the intimacy of a member's home, was enjoyable for "actors" and audience alike. The play was a commentary on society, expectations, the grand salons of the 17th and 18th centuries, the human condition, and communication.

We have organized and or participated in additional special cultural and social activities, such as our annual Holiday and Chinese New Year parties, an annual El Cinco de Mayo Mexican Fiesta, an annual concert at Caramoor which is usually language-related, Bastille Day festivities locally and in New York City, a summer picnic, Oktoberfests, an outing to the Russian enclave at Brighton Beach, performances at the Amato Opera, and Mardi Gras parties.

Past special activities have also included a flamenco show, a Halloween Party, French plays combined with Italian dinners, and dining in ethnic restaurants. Our 15th anniversary was celebrated with a Hudson River cruise, and our 20th with a gala. Other special outings have included a trip to the Chinese Scholar's Garden and the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum on Staten Island.
